Max Baumstein kills the Ambassador of Paraguay having recognised him as a former Nazi official. When he turns himself in, he tells the story of his childhood which includes the death of his father in Berlin in 1933, and of his guardians. Romy Schneider plays the part of Lina, Max's wife, and Elsa, the singer who took him in as a child. In her last screen appareance, she gives an extremely moving performance.
